The brief for the space design of The Vault of the Golden Vapors was succinct to the Gemini and Scorpio event planning house: “We need turn this space into a turn-of-the-century Shanghai night club.”
The Space for the Valentine's Day party being a 5000square foot loft located in a defunct toy factory in Brooklyn and a projected guest list of several hundred and a fairly tight budget, the challenge was evident. In the end, the space was broken up programmatically to create areas of rest while maintaining an open dancing platform and placing the stage against the west wall in order to allow the performers easy access to the temporary greenroom beyond. Since the budget did not permit for repairs to the ceiling, it was obscured from view by hundreds of colorful hangings and tinted lanterns to give the space a touch if softness amid the bare bones of the concrete floor plates of the loft.
