Philadelphia-based WallBreaker Lauren Rinaldi is quite the artist. Like most fine artists, many of her paintings begin with sketches. In this Instagram age, Lauren actually obsesses over everyone else’s obsession with the female figure. This series of sketches, entitled Cheeky Sketches, contains several layers of puns. She’s literally sketching butts, but she’s also making a social commentary about women who love to take selfies of their own body. I think Lauren understands that when people take photos of their own body and put them out into the world, they’re doing it to try to feel more secure, but on a societal level, it actually does the total opposite. Suddenly there’s a standard that everyone needs to meet and if you don’t, you’re somehow less valuable as a person. That couldn’t be further from the truth. As an aside, does anyone else hate the term “selfie?” A self-portrait was always a self-portrait. I think the term “selfie” further degrades the art in taking a good self portrait.
Now, with all of that being said, these sketches are awesome! Her handle on the female figure is fantastic. She’s definitely spent a good portion of time sketching models. Once you’re done scoping Lauren’s work, be sure to check out her last series, which we ran a few weeks back, called “Fine Art Semi-Nude Selfies from Lauren Rinaldi Which Gaze Into Insecurities Behind Narcissism.”
