I’ve been fortunate enough to interview David Shields for Breaking Walls twice before, The first interview took place in November 2015 and covered his book War Is Beautiful, in which David looked at over 2000 New York Times front-page war photos between 1991 and 2014. David found there to be something alarmingly disingenuous about too many of these front page shots. This interview can be found in Episodes 29 and 30 of Breaking Walls.
The second time I interviewed David was in March of 2017. We met for brunch at the famed jewish restaurant Russ & Daughters in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. This conversation at Russ & Daughters happened right after the release of David’s reflective book of essays, Other People: Takes and Mistakes, and his (then) latest film, I Think You Are Totally Wrong: A Quarrel (which was directed by James Franco). This interview can be found in Episode 55 of Breaking Walls.
On March 19, 2017, David was interviewed by his long-time friend Beth Hyams at Powell’s bookstore in Portland, Oregon. The interview was originally going to be featured on Oregon Public Broadcasting. When OPB couldn’t use it, (and it’s not for quality of interview)they released it back to David for him to use. He was kind enough to bring it to me.
It’s a great listen and centers around David’s career—specifically his last two works, War is Beautiful and Other People: Takes and Mistakes. David reads passages and answers questions from the audience.
David’s next book, NOBODY HATES TRUMP MORE THAN TRUMP: AN INTERVENTION is set for release on September 10, 2018. He’ll release his following work, a book-length essay entitled, The Trouble With Men: Reflections on Sex, Love, Marriage, Porn, and Power in February of 2019.
He’s also currently shopping a documentary called Lynch: A History on nonconformist NFL star Marshawn Lynch.
